#PeterTakeover: The road will be rocky but you won't be alone, PJ tells Phillips

Jamaica Gleaner / Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson has charged the new PNP president Dr Peter Phillips to retrofit the engines of the party to tackle a “new frontier” in fulfilling the mission to uplift Jamaica’s masses from poverty.

That new frontier, he said, involves the eradication of poverty and ignorance while fighting against corruption, discrimination and exploitation.

Patterson also said the party has to face issues relating to crime and violence and empower women and children.

But he said Phillips will not be alone in fixing the internal problems of the 78-year-old party.

“We are certain that the road will be rocky. But we cannot allow progress to falter, nor our energy to wane,” he said.

He added that discipline will be required at every step and Phillips must lead by example.

“Indiscipline and democracy can’t work together,” he said.

The party has suffered from internal strife since losing the 2016 elections.

It’s believed that calls for renewal from vocal members like Lisa Hanna helped to fuel a reexamination of the leadership and hastening of Simpson Miller’s departure.

Patterson served as PNP president from 1992, when he beat back Simpson Miller’s challenge, to 2006 when he retired as prime minister.

The internal election to replace him was won by Simpson Miller who became the Jamaica’s first female head of government.
