PNP to stage public conference on Sunday for Phillips? affirmation

Jamaica Gleaner / Delegates of the People’s National Party (PNP) will stage a special conference on Sunday when thousands are expected to witness the affirmation of party President-designate Dr Peter Phillips.

At a press conference yesterday to outline the plans, General Secretary Julian Robinson said the special delegates’ conference will be a non-voting public session opened to everyone.

“There will be no voting, as there is only one nominee, Dr Peter Phillips, who will be affirmed. And while the conference is termed a special delegates’ conference, it will be opened to the general public,” Robinson told journalists.

He said the delegates will decide how they chose to affirm Phillips – whether by raising the clenched fist, clapping, or shouts.

“It will be up to them to show how they do it. But they will not be asked to vote yea or nay, because it is not a resolution,” Robinson told The Gleaner .

Sunday’s conference, which will install Phillips as the fifth PNP president, is expected to have addresses from party officials, regional chairmen, party affiliates, former leader P.J. Patterson and outgoing leader Portia Simpson Miller.

The highlight of the day’s proceedings will be the keynote address from the new president, which is expected to begin at 2 p.m.

Delegates and supporters will be subjected to searches by the security forces and no weapons will be allowed inside the arena. There will also be some traffic changes leading to the location.

Phillips sought the leadership position in two previous unsuccessful attempts in 2006 and 2008.
