Polls Close In Local Government Election


RJR News / Polling stations across the island have closed in the 16th Local Government election since Universal Adult Suffrage was granted in 1944.    Residents of the Municipality of Portmore in St. Catherine also voted for a Mayor.    Preliminary figures suggest a low turn out of voters.    The Electoral Office reported a 20.94 per cent turnout as at 3:00 p.m. This comprises 387,109 electors.    The turn out for the election of Mayor of Portmore was 18.35 per cent or 17,079 electors.    In the last Local Government election on March 26, 2012, there was a 35 per cent turnout to vote for councillors and in Portmore, the Mayoral contest attracted 30 per cent of the electorate.
