Portmore seek to rebound

Jamaica Gleaner / Portmore United, on a low after back-to-back defeats in four days, will seek to rebound when they face struggling Boys’ Town in a rescheduled Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) game at Barbican Complex today starting at 3 p.m.

The match was originally scheduled for October 29 but was not played because of a waterlogged field.

Portmore, after a bright start to the new season with four wins and a draw in the first five games, were clipped 1-0 by the University of the West Indies a week ago, and four days later went down 3-0 to Reno at Frome.

Now, the five-time national champions will look for a positive result to end their poor run. Portmore are in third position on 13 points, and a win today would push them into second position ahead of UWI who are on 14 points. Arnett lead the 12-team table with 18 points.

The Shavar Thomas-coached Portmore will rely on their top scorer, Ricardo Morris, who is on four goals and Jermie Lynch (three goals) as well as Chevan Willis, Maalique Foster, Javon East, captain Ewan Grandison and Damano Solomon to put them back on a winning trail.

Boys’ Town are second to last on six points, and a win today would push them four places higher into eighth position.

“It is a very important game that we have in hand. It is our home game, so we have to maximise the opportunity and collect full points. We have not been scoring a lot of goals, picking up a lot of draws, so we need to start turning those into three points,” Boys’ Town’s coach, Andrew Price, told The Gleaner yesterday.

Price is aware that a wounded Portmore could be dangerous and he has prepared his team well.

“They (Portmore) are wounded, and one has to be fearful of somebody who is wounded. I know they will be coming strongly, so we have to prepare ourselves,” Price added.

The ‘Red Brigade’ will look to players such as national midfielder Jamiel Hardware, who is on two goals, as well as Raheem Porter and veterans Michael Campbell and Wayne Ellis, for victory.
