Protocol coming for medical marijuana

Jamaica Gleaner / Pure Jamaica Island Traders has announced a pending deal with Apollon Medical Formularies Jamaica Ltd for the establishment of the structured medical protocols to govern marijuana treatments in Jamaica.

The deal will also cover the exclusive export of medical cannabis products from Jamaica to other CARICOM and international markets.

Vice-president of Pure Jamaica, Dr Anthony Hall, is one of the first five physicians certified in the American state of Florida to recommend medical cannabis and he is spearheading the writing of the medical protocols.

Dr Hall is a neurological surgeon and has been monitoring the development of medical cannabis therapies in Florida and Jamaica over the past two years.

After using cannabis in the treatment of a multitude of patients with many diagnoses, Hall anticipates a broadening scope of treatment for other nations in the Caribbean, as well as the regional development of medical cannabis clinics similar to the one operated by Apollon in Negril.

Dr Hall has also been collaborating with Priest Douglas Smith, who has been intimately involved with chronically ill patients who have received cannabis therapies over the past year as part of Apollon’s preliminary research and development of applied medical marijuana treatments.

Smith, Apollon’s vice-president of Jamaican operations, has more than 30 years of experience as a holistic practitioner and naturopathic herbalist, and says the union of Pure Jamaica and Apollon Formularies will aid the growth and development of the medical marijuana industry in Jamaica and in the wider Caribbean.

This view is shared by Lair Hall, president of Pure Jamaica, who is confident that his company’s union with Apollon Formularies will benefit from the vitality of the Caribbean market and the interest of CARICOM member countries in developing medical tourism sites for patients seeking treatment with medical cannabis.

Apollon has already initiated the approval process of a comprehensive acquisition research protocol on medical cannabis therapies in Jamaica.

This protocol, combined with the protocols being prepared by Dr Hall, will be instrumental for Jamaican practitioners to assist them in determining dosages, schedules, potential interactions, and contraindications when treating their patients.

This protocol information will also be shared by Pure Jamaica with the Caribbean and other overseas markets.

The union of the two Jamaica-based companies is awaiting the issuance of export licences for both entities from the Cannabis Licensing Authority.

Worldwide, several researchers have implemented medical cannabis into the therapeutic methodology for patients with epilepsy, neuropathic pain, post laminectomy syndrome and many other neurologic disorders.

The scope is constantly expanding, with medical cannabis now used in the treatment of over 180 various diseases.
