Rangers shock Central*

Trinidad Express / DESPITE blowing a two-goal first-half lead and drawing Friday night’s top-of-the-table clash 2-2 with star-studded North East Stars at Ato Boldon Stadium, W Connection still hold the lead in the T&T Pro league, if only by a thread. Three-time defending champions Central FC were not so lucky, losing 0-1 to the bottom team, MIC-IT St. Ann’s Rangers. The Couva Sharks have picked up just one point in two matches this week against teams in the bottom half of the points table. After drawing 0-0 with Morvant Caledonia United on Tuesday, a bare-to-the-bone Central FC, curiously minus regular starters Jason Marcano and Sean De Silva, fell to a very competitive Rangers outfit. There was a contentious moment when Central’s main striker Tyrik John – son of former national Stern John – seemed to miss an open goal but instead, he argued with referee Crystal Sobers that his shot onto Carlos Edwards’ back-post pass had gone through the net and he had scored. However, none of the officials saw it that way. That miss returned to haunt Central six minutes later when former youth player Josh Toussaint cannoned a shot in off the cross bar for Rangers’ winner, in the 57th minute. Later, Rennie Britto was free after a brilliantly worked combination and would have got a second Rangers goal in the 78th minute but for a block by goalkeeper Stephon Seepersad.
