Spare the poor home-owners

Trinidad Express / I am in agreement that the property tax should not be implemented at this point in time, with the dire state of the economy and the general inability of people on fixed incomes to cope with any new taxes. People have been made to pay heavily in recent years due to the severe drop in energy prices. However, in keeping with the stated views of the Government in having well-off people pay their fair share of the burden, I suggest that only people whose homes are valued in excess of, say, $10,000 per month rental value, should pay the property tax as a temporary measure. This will send the right message to an understanding population. Another possible method is to let only those people who own multi-million dollar properties pay a new property tax. The property tax for other property owners can be implemented on a phased basis over a period of five to ten years. S Joseph via e-mail
