Tobago pays price for sea-bridge woes

News day / In a release, the TT Chamber stated that since April, the cargo and passenger services have been inadequate and the country, especially Tobago, was paying the price for the authorities’ failure.

This price included sparse grocery shelves and delays or unavailability of critical supplies.

About the island’s commercial sector it said, “We at the TT Chamber were inundated with reports of delays and changes in sailing schedules; delays in stock replenishment; increased transport expenses owing to inappropriate cargo vessels in use; increase in overtime costs; loss of revenue and overall poor port operations.

“Numerous respondents reported that only 40 percent of their average weekly sales was being shipped.” The chamber begged the authorities to redouble their efforts to restore the normalcy of the sea bridge, especially with the high-volume July/ August hotel season fast approaching, as well as the prospect of being under-stocked and ill-prepared for the effect of any approaching weather systems.
