‘TRICOLOR’ EDGE T&T*

Trinidad Express / THERE was a fiesta in Puerto de Espana (Post of Spain) last night, but only Mexicans were dancing. The ‘Tricolor’ kept their unbeaten record intact when prevailing 1-0 over Trinidad and Tobago last night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in the CONCACAF ‘Hexagonal’ qualifying series for the Russia 2018 World Cup. Mexico stayed on top with 10 points following the close but valuable victory, which came when Diego Reyes scored from a set play by heading in a corner-kick down the centre, in the 58th-minute. T&T dropped to last in the six-nation series, passed by Honduras, who picked up a point in a 1-1 home draw against Costa Rica. A red-clad crowd, numbering just about 15,000, packed the HCS, and were in great cheer, except when Mexico scored. T&T matched Mexico for the most part, with neither team creating distinct clear-cut chances and Mexico edging it from the valuable Reyes’ goal. Before then, the teams exchanged chances in the opening 10 minutes, with T&T goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams keeping out a close-up header from Mexican captain Hector Moreno, while at the other end, a Joevin Jones’ whipped-in cross necessitated a touch by Mexican goalkeeper, Jesus Corona, to keep it out.
