T&T Sambo team off to Sochi for World Champs

The trinidad Guardian / Kelvin Guy, Martin Joseph and Keron Bourne make up an experienced T&T contingent due to arrive in Sochi, Russia tomorrow to compete in various categories at the World Sambo Championships.

Guy will compete in sport sambo at the 100kg weight division, while Joseph and Bourne will compete in combat sambo at the 90kg and 62kg weight divisions respectively.Among the T&T squad, Bourne is the

favourite to medal as he will be the top competitor in his weight division, following an outstanding gold-medal performance at the President’s Cup Combat Sambo Grand Slam in London, England in September.

At the last World Championship, Bourne and Joseph finished 5th and 11th overall in their weight divisions respectively.

Guy is also no stranger to the competition, as he has represented the nation in previous editions.

The surprise exclusion to the team is Domingo Bickharry, who captured a bronze medal in the combat sambo 74kg weight division at the President’s Cup, this is due to financial constraints experienced by the team, as a ticket to Russia could cost upwards of $23, 000.

President of the T&T Sambo and Combat Sambo Federation, and team manager Jason Fraser told Guardian Media Sports, “I’m hoping that our athletes will medal at the tournament but I know that all the conditions are against us, I am keeping very positive that we can show and represent Trinidad and Tobago to the best of our ability.”The conditions Fraser alludes to is the fact that T&T will be one of the last teams to arrive in Sochi, which will be a great disadvantage to the athletes as they will have no time to acclimatise.

The athletes will be in action at different times throughout the day from the commencement of the tournament on Friday to the conclusion on Sunday.
