T&T’s Balgobin fades in Walcott’s title run

The trinidad Guardian / EDMONTON, Alberta – Rico Walcott continued his unchallenged march to his seventh jockeys’ title at Northlands Park with a triple on Friday, as Caribbean jockeys won all but two of the races on the day’s programme.

The ace reinsman from Barbados carried his aggregate for the season to 90 wins – 40 clear of his nearest rival, T&T’s ‘s Keishan Balgobin, one of two other Caribbean jockeys that collected doubles on the 10-race card on the penultimate day of racing at western Canada’s premier racing oval.

Jamaica’s Shamaree Muir also completed a double and compatriot Dane Nelson ensured another feast for Caribbean riders with a late win.

Walcott opened the programme with a commanding, eight-length victory aboard the 8-5 favourite Election Vow in a 1,700-metre trip on the dirt track worth CAN $11,500.

He also won with 3-2 second favourite The Lady Chablis over 1,200 metres and 9-1 shot Backstreet Bobby who prevailed over the field by 1 ? lengths going 1,300 metres.

Balgobin broke through with an authoritative 9 ?-lengths victory astride the odds-on favourite Silent Truth in the CAN $18,500 third race, a 1,100-metre sprint on the dirt and followed up with a 2 1/4-length victory on the 3-2 second choice Capitalism which beat four others in a 1,200m dash on the dirt in the CAN $20,700 fourth race.
