Trinidad Express / The man whose body was found in the wreckage of a car that crashed off the highway in Chaguanas early on Friday, has been identified. The victim is 25-year-old Stephen Mahadeo, of Montrose, Chaguanas.
The Express was told that at around 4a.m. Mahadeo was at the wheel of his black Subaru, registration PCF 6658, headed on the northbound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway in the vicinity of the highway opposite the Ministry of Agriculture Land and Fisheries building when he lost control of the vehicle and came into contact with a tree on the left side of the roadway.
The vehicle split in two with one half of the vehicle coming to rest in the small river ravine and the other on the river bank. Mahadeo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sgt Mohan of the Central Highway Patrol Unit who responded to the incident involving Stephen Mahdeo, described the damage to the Subaru as “unbelievable” as the vehicle was separated into two pieces and was heartbroken to have to provide the news of the death of their son to the Mahadeo family.
At around 9:45 am, a road traffic accident along the Eastern Main Road, in the vicinity of Unilever Caribbean Ltd, claimed the life of motorcyclist Andre Chandler Rivers, 33, of Maracas St Joseph.

The two incidents bring the currently road death figure to 20 for 2017 compared to 40 for the same period last year. Police reminded motorists that tragedies such as these are preventable if drivers and road users would exercise more care and restraint when using the nation’s roadways.
