UPDATE: Jury considering verdict in Ninja Man's murder trial

Jamaica Gleaner / A seven-member jury is now considering a verdict in the murder case against dancehall entertainer Ninja Man and his two co-accused.

The jury retired about 1 o’clock.

Ninja Man, whose given name is Desmond Ballentyne, is on trial along with his son, Janeil, and Dennis Clayton, for the 2009 fatal shooting of Ricardo Johnson, also known as Ricky Trooper, in the Lower Mall Road community.

They were also charged with shooting with intent.

Ninja Man and his co-accused have been on trial for the past three weeks in a hearing that is closed to the public because it is a gun matter.

After the prosecution called a total of seven witnesses including three civilians, Clayton’s attorney made a no-case submission, but Justice Martin Gayle ruled that he had a case to answer.

The attorneys for Ninja Man and his son did not make a submission.

The case, which was first mentioned in court in 2009, has had 17 missed trial dates and 23 mention dates in eight years.

When it finally got underway in the Home Circuit Court on October 17, Justice Gayle revoked Ninja Man’s bail and he was taken into custody.

Two weeks later, Ninja Man fell ill and had to be taken to hospital.

He had suffered a mild heart attack.
