Windies Women get a wake up call from T&T U-19s

The trinidad Guardian / The West Indies Women’s cricket team’s warm-up match was curtailed by rain but the regional ladies still had a fairly good workout yesterday, ahead of Wednesday’s first One-Day International against Sri Lanka Women at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.

They faced T&T’s Under-19 boys cricket team at the same venue where captain Stafanie Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first. While Taylor was the stand out player for her side the overall team batting, will be of concern to her going into the opening ODI as the Windies Women lost wickets consistently.

Openers Hayley Matthews and Reniece Boyce both made seven runs, putting on a meagre 22 runs for the first wicket.

The second wicket fell at 35 runs as the regional ladies were hit hard by two early Sharon Lewis wickets. Things only got worse as the West Indies Women slipped to 76 for five before being propped up by Taylor’s unbeaten 51. In response, the T&T Under-19 openers were ruthless in their approach. Christian Thurton and Julien went after the Windies Women bowling, more so Thurton. He scored a quick fire 80 with the local boys looking on course for an easy victory. All of the Windies Women’s bowlers found life difficult. Connell went for 24 runs from her four overs while Shakera Selman conceded 28 runs from five overs. At the other end, Julien made 26. Both batsmen ended unbeaten before the match was abandoned due to the poor weather conditions. Only 18.1 overs were bowled, 11 balls short of what would have constituted an easy Duckworth/Lewis victory for the T&T Under-19 cricketers.
