Holmwood's Williams Wins Discus Throw On Opening Day Of Penn Relays

Holmwood Technical‘s Cedricka Williams won the high school girls discus throw title on the opening day of the Penn Relays being held at the University of Pennsylvania at the Franklin Field Stadium in the United States. Williams threw 54 meters flat for the victory, just off the meet record of 54.72 metres set by another Jamaican, Shanice Love of Excelsior in 2016. Victoria Christie of Camperdown was second with 44.88 metres. Elsewhere in the field, Edwin Allen‘s Serena Cole leapt 5.98 metres for second in the  long jump, while Annishka McDonald of St Jago registered 1.69 metres for third in the high jump. On the track, red hot favourites Edwin Allen were the fastest into the Championship of America 4x100m final clocking 44.64 seconds. Edwin Allen was the fastest Jamaican school into the final of the 4x800m after clocking 9 minute, 13.89 seconds for the runner-up spot behind Union Catholic 9 minute, 13.08 seconds. Holmwood Technical with 9 minutes, 23.48 seconds also advanced to the final. Hydel High was the fastest qualifier for the final of the 4 x400 metres with 3 minutes, 39.34 seconds. Holmwood Technical 3:41.95, Edwin Allen 3:45.29, St Jago 3:49.50 and Excelsior 3:51.15 seconds, also advanced to the final. All three finals will be contested on Friday. Also on Friday, the high school boys will  begin their campaign at the relay carnival which is making a return after a 2 year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
